France’s leading cancer center, Institut Curie is recognized both in France and internationally for its excellence in research and patient care.

For the past three years, Gino has supported Institut Curie in improving its contract management performance. Régine Borgeot, Legal Director, takes us behind the scenes of this collaboration.

Institut Curie at a glance

Institut Curie is a non-profit foundation recognized as serving the public interest. It is both France’s leading cancer center and a state-of-the-art hospital and research center.

Institut Curie in numbers:

  • 3 hospital sites
  • 88 research teams, with 3,800 doctors and researchers
  • 10 technology platforms
  • 2,400+ employees
  • 53,800 patients treated every year

Institut Curie’s doctors and researchers work towards two key objectives:

  1. Advance research through cutting-edge equipment, including the FRATHEA project, as well as dedicated IT solutions and infrastructure.
  2. Provide comprehensive care to support and treat people with cancer.

The role of Legal at Institut Curie

Régine and her team work across a wide range of legal matters:

  • Patients’ rights, including informed consent, access to medical records, privacy and ongoing legal matters.
  • Clinical trials and the commercialization of research conducted at Institut Curie, including licensing agreements.
  • Procurement, which is subject to French public procurement regulations.
  • The legal framework for new hospital construction projects. To date, 17 agreements have been signed with regional hospital groups to expand access to high-quality care.

The Legal team therefore has a 360° view of Institut Curie’s contractual matters and plays a key role in supporting and developing the foundation’s activities.

On a day-to-day basis, the team faces four key challenges:

  1. Generating contracts tailored to Institut Curie’s different projects
  2. Managing contracts throughout their lifecycle, from negotiation to signature and subsequent changes
  3. Ensuring compliance across all contractual documentation
  4. Improving operational efficiency to spend more time on higher-value work

How did Institut Curie successfully adopt Gino?

From day one, Gino’s legal professionals and experts have supported Institut Curie’s Legal team with the CLM rollout.

The platform was implemented in several stages, making it easier for everyone involved to adopt Gino.

Step 1: Build understanding around the technology shift

Even before the CLM was introduced, all stakeholders were involved in the project, with particular attention paid to employees who were less comfortable with digital tools.

Together with Gino’s team, Régine made sure employees could:

  • Understand the context behind the change
  • Have clear visibility into the implementation timeline
  • Understand the benefits and objectives of the project

Step 2: Train teams on the platform

Over several weeks, Institut Curie’s Legal team worked closely with Gino’s experts to develop a training program.

The approach was simple: start with straightforward features, such as e-signature, and gradually build users’ confidence and skills.

Ultimately, around 20 employees from Legal and other strategic departments integrated Gino into their day-to-day toolset.

Step 3: Adapt the platform to the organization’s needs

Once users were comfortable with the platform, Gino’s legal professionls and experts continued to advise teams and provide day-to-day support through a tailored approach adapted to the organization’s needs.

Today, Institut Curie manages more than 70 types of contracts covering a wide range of projects.

To make contract creation and management easier, Gino’s team supported the development of a dynamic clause library containing more than 100 components.

“Whenever we need to update a clause, we know that the new wording will be implemented securely across all our contracts. It’s incredible — as a Legal Director, it gives me both security and peace of mind.”

Institut Curie x Gino: a long-term partnership

Institut Curie’s Legal team and business users continue to expand their use of the platform. Users particularly value how intuitive and easy to use Gino is — an essential factor in encouraging continued adoption.

Contract management is now smoother, more secure and better integrated into the organization’s business processes. The CLM is no longer simply a tool: it has become a strategic driver of collective performance.

The next step? Making full use of Gino’s capabilities to further strengthen Institut Curie’s contract management agility.

“Our goal is for the CLM platform to become fully embedded in the day-to-day work of our business teams, so they can take advantage of all the solutions available to them.”
